WatchESPN for iPhone and iPad
Cable sports giant ESPN offers a mobile app that lets you watch live sports and shows on your iPhone or iPad no matter where you happen to be. The app is called WatchESPN. And coque iphone 4 originale I would certainly love to, if I could get the app to dependably stream video.
WatchESPN has been available on the App Store for more than a year now, though the app originally was limited to coque iphone 4 originale select cable providers. When ESPN added Comcast to the ESPNWatch fold earlier this year, I finally got the chance to sample the app and its streaming options--not just the ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU cable channels but also sports being shown on the company's ESPN3 online channel. (An updated list of cable providers that support WatchESPN is available on the app's App Store page.)
Getting started with WatchESPN is an uncomplicated process. You choose your cable provider from the list displayed in coque iphone 4 originale the app. The sign-in procedure may vary from there, but if you're a Comcast customer like me, you sign in using your Comcast ID from within the app. I was even able to retrieve my forgotten password from within WatchESPN. And I can remain logged in, so that I only have to sign in initially.
From there, you jump to a coque iphone 4 originale screen listing all the programs currently available for live streaming. Both the iPad and iPhone versions of WatchESPN have a carousel displaying featured programming, along with batterie externe iphone a scrollable list; the iPad uses its extra screen real estate to offer some different views of content.
It's once you tap on an event or show in the list that the magic--or disappointment--begins. After a short wait, the stream of your program begins playing. Whether or not it will batterie externe iphone continue playing, however, can be a hit or miss affair. I've put the app through its paces for the past week, and I can't claim to have gotten a consistent experience. At its best, WatchESPN will continuously pipe live sports action to your iPhone or iPad, with the occasional buffering hiccup. And at its worst? The app will lose the stream entirely, bouncing you back to the batterie externe iphone list of available programs. Sometimes in my testing, the picture would freeze and then speed up to catch up with the live stream; other times, I'd lose the video entirely (though the audio would continue to play), with no apparent way to bring it back.
This isn't necessarily ESPN's fault. Its batterie externe iphone app is at the mercy of whatever network you happen to be connected to, and if you're out and about, that can change as rapidly as the momentum in a Stanley Cup playoff game.
Romney iPhone app misspells 'America' to Web's delight
It's probably not the coque batterie iphone 4 kind of thing voters will use to choose the leader of the free world.
But the Web was taking no coque batterie iphone 4 shortage of presidential potshots Wednesday over Republican candidate Mitt Romney's new mobile app, which embarrassingly misspelled "America."
Yes, Internet. Welcome to AMERCIA.
"Sorry about the shaking California, that was just the rest of America laughing at Mitt Romney running for Pres. of #Amercia," wrote a person behind a parody President Obama account on Twitter (referencing a minor earthquake late Tuesday).
The gaffe, presumably by some poor developer hired by the campaign, appears on "With Mitt," the campaign's newly coque batterie iphone 4 released iPhone app. The app invites users to photograph themselves with their choice of 14 pro-Romney slogans such as "I'm a Mom For Mitt," "Obama Isn't Working" and "The America We Love," and then share them on social media.
But one of the slogans reads, "A Better Amercia." Oops. Somebody didn't observe the "I-before-C" rule.
An update to the "With Mitt" app, with the typo corrected, became available at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday. No one with the coque batterie iphone 4 campaign was speaking on the record about it, but staffers were downplaying its importance in the run-up to November. By Wednesday afternoon, the campaign also had paid for a "promoted tweet" that appears when a Twitter users searches for "Amercia."
Slips of the tongue by political candidates are, of course, not uncommon. In 2008, then-candidate Obama got grief for saying he'd visited "all 57 states." And Vice President Joe Biden's free-speaking nature has gotten him no shortage of headlines.
But the Web's politically minded (many of whom, presumably, don't consider Romney their top choice), were noting that when a mistake appears in writing, it shows a lack of attention to detail.
"If you're applying for a job, and étui iphone 4 cuir you misspell the name of the company you want to work for, you won't get that job. #Amercia," wrote a Twitter user.
"#Amercia" was a trending topic (meaning it's one of the most discussed terms) on Twitter late Tuesday and again Wednesday morning.
The typo has already also inspired its étui iphone 4 cuir own Tumblr blog, "Amercia Is With Mitt."
It features photos created with the app and, as of Wednesday morning, included a group of spelling bee champions, Beaker from "The Muppet Show" and Rich Uncle Moneybags, the Monopoly mascot, among its subjects.
And numerous images were popping up on Instagram -- one highlight being Bart Simpson having to write the correctly étui iphone 4 cuir spelled "America" during his iconic chalkboard gag from the intro to "The Simpsons."
To be honest, the Romney camp is probably more pleased at winning enough delegates in the Texas primaries Tuesday to make him the unofficial GOP nominee than it is worried about a spelling gaffe.
And it's worth noting that lots of folks who support Romney probably only learned that the étui iphone 4 cuir app exists because of talk about the typo.
The Bremont boys Flying fanatic brothers who founded Britain's smartest watch brand
There isn’t an entrepreneur in Britain who embodies his brand’s image so perfectly as Bremont’s Nick English. His RAF hair, Boy’s Own spirit, Biggles’ wardrobe, officers’ mess vernacular and gripping back story are all so charmingly on-brand that Accessoires iphone you can hardly believe he’s for real.
I am with Nick, co-proprietor with his brother Giles of the Bremont wristwatch brand, established as recently as 2007 but already highly regarded among watch aficionados and worn by the likes of Tom Cruise, Ewan McGregor and Hugh Laurie. We are on the lush green runway at White Waltham airfield near Maidenhead, waiting for clearance to take off in Accessoires iphone the Bremont company vehicle, an Avions Max Holste ‘Broussard’ MH-1521 six-seater utility plane employed by the French army during the Algerian War of Independence as an army cooperation aircraft, an artillery spotter and air supply/ambulance role. ‘And sometimes for dropping napalm on the enemy,’ adds Nick over the glorious racket of the single propeller clattering a couple of feet away.
Nick’s livery is period appropriate: oily green jeans, brown RAF-issue flying boots, a scraggy old scarf and a leather flying jacket distressed to louche perfection. On the aircraft’s fuselage is a painting of the mischievous cartoon character Felix the Cat holding a Accessoires iphone bomb with a sparkling fuse. Further down is the Bremont logo. We aren’t even airborne yet and I am already sold on this brilliantly British brand.
Nick taxis the Broussard along the grass, sparks up a map-reading app on his iPhone and increases the revs, taking off with such dignity and elegance I almost cry. We glide towards Henley-on-Thames, over Accessoires iphone swimming pools and golf courses, circling George Harrison’s house. After pointing out Bremont’s new headquarters, currently under construction in a converted barn just outside Henley, we fly over Nick’s family home — he and brother Giles are both married with three young children apiece, including a set of twins each. ‘Just need to say hello to the kids,’ he says. Down below, Nick’s wife Christine is out in the garden. A couple of children run out behind her, waving madly upwards. Nick waggles the wings in affectionate acknowledgement.
Buzzing with delight as we land at RAF Henley-on-Thames, a Second World War airfield from where Hun-bothering Spitfires and Hurricanes took off during the Battle of Britain, we find Nick’s brother Giles waiting with his own Bremont-branded RV4 plane. Over lasagne we peruse the aero memorabilia in the semi-tubular Second World War buildings where pride of place is given to a portrait of Euan English, Nick and Giles’s father, former proprietor of this airfield, award-winning aerobatics pilot and Spitfire owner. Equipped with an aeronautical engineering PhD from Cambridge, the boys tell me, Euan spent his life either in the air or in the workshop, building planes, tinkering with clocks and watches and fiddling with engines — imagine Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’s Caractacus Potts with an honours degree and you get the picture. ‘Dad had a huge passion for anything mechanical. As kids we sailed around the Mediterranean for six months in a boat that he had built. He built planes that we still fly today including the [Barney Robert Jones] plane I flew here,’ says Giles. ‘He subsidised his way through university by restoring old clocks and he’d buy one from an auction and get us kids to restore it. It was his idea of creative babysitting.’
In March 1995, 49-year-old Euan English was killed in a horrific aviation accident. Out on a training flight for a summer air show with his co-pilot son Nick, then 23, their Second World War Harvard plane suffered engine failure and hit a field near Maldon in Essex. Nick has vague recollections of hearing a panicked ‘Mayday!’ call on the radio but only really remembers getting into the plane and then waking in hospital with a smashed-up body. But he has photographs. ‘This is the wreck of the plane,’ he says, showing me a crumpled mangle of metal bereft of shape or form. ‘And that’s my shoe.’ Nick broke 30 bones in the crash, surviving only because a passing helicopter carrying an anaesthetist and trauma surgeon was quickly on the scene. A 13-year-old witness to the crash pulled Euan from the cockpit, believing Nick to be already dead. The boy has been in post-trauma counselling ever since and still keeps in touch with the brothers. Nick was too sick to attend his father’s funeral — a typically stylish rural occasion in Norfolk with a casket carried on a classic Land Rover — but he has the nameplate of the Harvard stored away as a keepsake.
Fatherless and rudderless, the montre plastique couleur brothers were left with an airfield to run and big boots to fill. But in many ways, it is with the crash and their father’s untimely death that the story of the Bremont wristwatch brand really begins. Both boys quit their City jobs and made a bold decision: in honour of their father’s passion for mechanical timepieces they would start their own watch brand.
‘We knew Britain actually had a stranger and more credible history for watchmaking than the Swiss ever had and we wanted to help re-establish it,’ says Giles. ‘When we started, there were 750 Swiss watch brands out there but just a handful of British marques.’ ‘We were fuelled on naivety, mainly,’ smiles Nick.
Sketches were drawn, themes and ideas for a ‘tool watch’ range of butch utility timepieces considered; prototypes were made. Then they went to Baselworld, the vast annual wristwatch trade fair in Switzerland, and were overcome by the scale, budget and array of their new rivals. ‘We saw lots of brands that appeared to have an illustrious history and that seems very impressive at first, but when you dig a bit deeper you discover that, while it may have started in 1885 or whenever, there’s probably been a very long period where it was pretty much dormant and it has only recently been revived.’
Giles and Nick weren’t interested in reviving. They wanted their brand to be honest, solid, boldly British, ingeniously mechanical, and to look good on Belstaff-wearing, Triumph motorbike-riding alpha males. ‘We are anally retentive when it comes to engineering — you have to be when you’re flying — so we decided that we didn’t need a history and we certainly didn’t want to invent one. We wanted to start from scratch making the kind of watches a man could wear in the boardroom or take up a mountain. We wanted to break up the monopolies of big names such as the Swatch group, Rolex, Richemont and LVMH. Aim at the kind of man who maybe already has a few nice watches, who sits in a meeting with five other guys who are all wearing Rolex Daytonas and says to himself, “I want something a bit different.”?’
That said, putting the name ‘English’ on their watches, even though it was their surname, wasn’t a runner. ‘It might have looked a bit corny and would have been hard to trademark,’ says Nick. Instead, the Bremont marque was borrowed from a Frenchman the boys montre plastique couleur encountered during another aviation mishap — a happier accident this time.
Flying their old German biplane through mid-France during a heavy storm, the brothers landed in a farmer’s field. This kindly gentilhomme came to their rescue, offering a barn in which to montre plastique couleur store the aircraft and a bed for the night. Like their father, the man was an engineer and a pilot with a passion for planes and horology.
‘He was 78 and it was just as if our father had lived on 30 or so more years,’ says Giles. The man’s name was Antoine montre plastique couleur Bremont. ‘He thought we were completely mad when we told him we were turning his name into a brand,’ says Nick.
Determined to make their watches tougher than any others, the Bremont outfit embarked on a weapons-grade research and development programme. They did a deal with the British-based ejector-seat manufacturer Martin-Baker, whose test lab shook the watches vigorously for three days, replicating 40 years of vibrations. There were extreme climatic and height tests, ‘because the kind of guys we are dealing with might be in Alaska one day and the Nevada desert the next,’ says Nick. Of course they may. ‘Watch cases get hand-finished in the same Cambridge factory responsible for Rolls-Royce’s turbine blade engines,’ says Giles, the geekier, techier of the brothers who likes to roll and loop his planes. The finished results come in at around £3,000 to £7,000.
To bolster Giles’s engineering expertise they signed up technical director Peter Roberts, formerly of Rolex and IWC, and brought in Links of London founder John Ayton as chairman. Now Bremont is a true Swiss-buster of a brand, ranked among the top 15 chronometer producers in the world and worn by aviators and mavericks alike. With 40 different retailers in the UK and a Mayfair flagship opening this summer, and a big following in the US, they are now going into Hong Kong, the Middle East and Thailand. But, says Nick, ‘I think we might not be quite “bling” enough for Russia.’
Bremont clocks are on the dashboards of all new Jaguar car models, and the company recently made a bespoke chronograph fob watch for the Duke of Edinburgh. Rolling Stone guitarist turned artist Ronnie Wood has hand-painted a series of Bremont clock faces, and limited editions have been made for Norton motorcycles and from the metal of rare Second World War planes. The latest special edition is ‘a horological masterpiece’, claims Giles, which includes oak timber and copper from the 18th-century gunship HMS Victory, with some of the proceeds going towards the preservation of the historic ship.
It is important to Bremont to use its collective contacts to get pilots, seamen, aviation nuts and adventurers to endorse the brand; last week it sponsored Gary ‘The Wingman’ Connery’s skydive without a montre plastique couleur parachute in which he fell 2,400ft. ‘He landed on 19,000 cardboard boxes,’ says Nick. ‘Our logo was attached to his suit with Velcro so we could quickly whip it off if he failed.’ Who knew watchmaking could be such a risky business.
